The discbox is the future. People will pay extra for a great 'must have' quality release rather than the 4 thin-page CD in a flimsy jewel case.

if i was only buying the download, i think £5 is a fair price for the album.

Discbox. Is everyone on here aware that if they buy the discbox, they get the download for free?

The more I think about this marketing model, the better it seems. All the cheap scrotes paying pennies for it are the kind of people who'd nick the album off a mate anyway - so they lose zero sales. And proper fans know the money they do decide to pay goes to the band.

Be absolutely fascinating to find out how much the 'Head make from this.

Genius idea. They'll probably make more than most bands who put their album out through a label, despite thousands of people taking the piss by paying nothing for it.

Don't hate the media - BE the media!

That's what Radiohead are doing!

It's not a new idea - Jonah Matranga has let people choose their price on his site for a long time:

http://jonah.safewebshop.com/

He's not as big as Radiohead, though, so naturally not many people realise.

Best band in the world right now by far, and one of the greatest of all time. This Radiohead album is priceless.

This could be a work of utter genius - the (effectively) free download and then cash up front PRE-ORDER for the physical version takes the financial burden out of distribution, one of the reasons bands need record companies. Now all we need to figure out is how bands who haven't already had 10 years of record company marketing money can pull this stunt too.

I really like having a hard-copy of the music on a CD... and as you don't see a Radiohead album every year, well I thought I'd treat myself and get the discbox.

I love Radiohead so happily paid for the box set. I like the idea of choosing how much to pay. If you could back pay after hearing it, that would be a great solution.

Probably wouldn't have ordered the box had it not included a vinyl version. I like new technology well enough but nothing beats an old fashioned elpee, either on sound quality or as a tactile, collectible, wantable object. I'm about halfway between being enraptured and irritated by Radiohead's music, but I've always admired the way they go about the business of interraction with their fans. I hope more people follow suit, though I recognise that experiments of this type can only be undertaken successfully (and by that I mean profitably - there's nothing very 21st century or new media about artists living in penury) by people with large extant fan bases. It's a great idea, but it's still not The Answer some people insist on believing exists.

I would have happily paid more for than £40 for the Discbox.

I hope they pull it soon so that all the 'I paid nothing as I reserve the right to hear it before shelling out for the discbox' cannot get their hands on it.

More bands should do this. I'd often give a £2-£3 for an album where I wouldn't spend £8 to get it off Itunes.
